I am a researcher, looking at the way human culture evolves. My focus is on traditional weaving cultures, which include both short-lived and long-lived aspects (traditions). These make a good laboratory for how complex culture is experienced and how it is passed from generation to generation.

My current focus is on loom designs. These are amongst the most durable aspects of weaving culture, passed conservatively from generation to generation. Some looms have traceable histories going back thousands of years, making them comparable with language in this respect.

I edit the journal Fiber, Loom and Technique.

I am a graduate of Balliol College and Wolfson College, Oxford, and a Member of the Common Room at Wolfson. I mainly work independently.
